Middle School

Nurturing Curiosity, Building Community, Empowering Growth

At Westside School, our middle school program is designed with the whole student in mind. Rooted in a student-centered, inquiry-based approach, we create an environment where curiosity is celebrated, and learning is driven by the students' own questions and interests. Our holistic curriculum integrates rigorous academics, the arts, social justice, and social-emotional learning, ensuring that each student is nurtured as a thinker, creator, and community member.

Through engaging, hands-on experiences and a supportive learning community, Westside’s middle school empowers students to explore their interests, develop critical thinking skills, and grow into confident, compassionate individuals ready to make a positive impact on the world. Our middle school program is informed by the principles of the Responsive Classroom, guiding students’ growth and development through an understanding of their social, emotional, physical, and academic needs at different stages of their middle school journey.

We recognize that middle schoolers are at a pivotal stage of development, and our program is tailored to meet them where they are, based on research-backed "yardsticks" that outline the typical developmental milestones for each age group. This approach helps us create a learning environment that is both challenging and supportive, allowing students to thrive as they navigate the complexities of adolescence.

By focusing on the whole child, we foster independence, responsibility, and a strong sense of community, preparing our students not just for each step in their academic journey but for lifelong success.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

"My two daughters went through the Westside program, one is a sophomore and the other is in 8th grade. Their academic experience has prepared them for college prep schools, but more important, both girls have become confident, engaged and happy young women. They are comfortable in their own skin." -Westside Parent
