Standing Firm in Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging
Dear Westside Community,
We are writing with a deep sense of purpose as we reflect on recent executive orders that challenge the principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) and threaten the rights of LGBTQIA+, specifically transgender and non-binary individuals and other marginalized groups. At Westside School, we remain steadfast in our commitment to fostering an inclusive and affirming community where all members feel valued, respected, and empowered to be their authentic selves.
We know that representation, respect, and affirmation have profound impacts on the lives of our students and their families. Our efforts to cultivate a safe, inclusive environment for all learners—regardless of race, gender identity, sexual orientation, or any other aspect of identity—are not merely initiatives but an integral part of who we are as a community. These efforts will continue, reflecting our unwavering commitment to inclusivity and belonging.
As an independent school, Westside School does not receive or rely on any federal funding. This independence allows us to maintain autonomy over our programs, policies, and values, ensuring that external pressures do not compromise our mission or the safe, inclusive environment we strive to create for our community.
Our mission to nurture critical thinkers who act with compassion in a joyful, supportive community calls us to confront injustice and champion equity. The recent actions at the national level underscore the importance of continuing to prioritize this work—not only in what we teach but also in how we live our values as a school.
This is not about politics. It is about holding firm to our principles as a community. Actions and statements that undermine the identities or worth of any individuals continue to have no place here. Our school is and will remain a safe space for all, regardless of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, or citizenship status.
Westside School will continue to:
-
Provide education rooted in empathy, cultural awareness, and critical thinking.
-
Support our LGBTQIA+ students, families, and faculty with intentional policies and practices that affirm and protect their rights.
-
Advocate for equity and inclusion within our classrooms and the broader community.
We recognize that these times can feel uncertain and even frightening. Please know that we are here to support you. If you or your family need additional resources, a listening ear, or guidance, we encourage you to reach out to us, to our Director of DEIB, to your child’s Division Head, or to our counseling team.
Together, we have the power to nurture a generation of compassionate changemakers who will help shape a more just and inclusive world.
Thank you for being part of this essential work. Together, we are creating a school where every child is celebrated, where barriers to success are removed, and where we hope each member of our community knows they belong.
With gratitude,
Steve de Beer
