Expanding Horizons: Westside 8th Graders Travel the World

At Westside School, education extends far beyond the classroom at every grade level. For our 8th graders, that goes thousands of miles outside the classroom. Each year, our 8th-grade students have the opportunity to embark on international journeys to Mandarin and a Spanish-speaking countries. These immersive trips are not just opportunities for travel—they are experiences tied to our robust world language program that foster cultural understanding, independence, and a global perspective.

Last year, Westside students explored both Taiwan and Panama, two vastly different destinations that offered unforgettable lessons in history, culture, and adventure.

A Journey Through Taiwan

From the vibrant streets of Ximen to the tranquil halls of Longshan Temple, students began their Taiwan adventure immersed in the country's rich blend of Japanese and Taiwanese influences. They explored Daoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism, learned about Taiwan’s history at the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial, and even honed their culinary skills by making pineapple shortbread cakes at the Mandarin Training Center.

Beyond the city, students embraced the natural beauty of Taiwan—from tropical forests in Wulai to the stunning coastal landscapes of Yilan. They sent sky lanterns into the night sky in Jiufen, haggled at bustling markets, and took in breathtaking views from Taipei 101. The trip was filled with hands-on learning, from sustainable tea farming practices to poetry picnics on Yangming Mountain.

An Unforgettable Panama Adventure

Meanwhile, another group of 8th graders set off for Panama, where they kicked off their journey in the historic district of Casco Viejo with a rooftop dinner, a scavenger hunt, and a visit to the world-famous Panama Canal.

The trip then took them to Bocas del Toro, where they snorkeled in crystal-clear waters, spotted rare birds on rainforest hikes, and even ventured into a bat cave. Students explored Indigenous culture through a visit to the Museo de Mola and engaged in hands-on conservation work by planting trees at a collaborative cacao farm. Their journey concluded with a boat trip through the original Panama Canal, followed by a final night of reflection and celebration.

Why International Travel Matters

Westside’s international trips are more than just exciting getaways—they are an extension of our commitment to experiential learning. By stepping outside their comfort zones, students develop adaptability, resilience, and an appreciation for diverse cultures. These trips encourage them to navigate new environments, communicate across language barriers, and engage with global issues firsthand.

To ensure that all students can participate, we provide reduced fares for families receiving tuition assistance, making these life-changing experiences accessible to every student.

We are deeply grateful to our faculty and staff who lead these journeys, as well as to our students and families, for embracing the spirit of adventure. Each trip leaves a lasting impact, shaping our students into curious, open-minded global citizens.
