For many families, middle school feels like an exciting next step, often accompanied by a few understandable questions and a quiet disbelief that their child is really this grown up. At Westside, middle school does not mark a sudden shift. It builds naturally on what students have learned and experienced since their earliest years at school.
One of the things that makes a PS-8 school special is the sense of continuity students experience over time. Students are well known to teachers and staff, often working with the same educators for multiple years. This consistency builds strong relationships, trust, and a deep understanding of each child as a learner. Rather than starting over each year, students are supported by adults who understand their strengths, challenges, and growth, helping each transition feel purposeful and steady.
A PS-8 environment also offers repeated opportunities to take on responsibility and practice leadership within a supportive community. Students grow as leaders by contributing to the life of the school, mentoring younger peers, and stepping into roles that challenge them to think independently and act with integrity. New students are welcomed into a culture where relationships matter, and belonging is prioritized.
Walk through campus on any given day, and you will see this in action. Older students greet younger buddies, collaborate across grades, and help shape a school culture where everyone looks out for one another. Multi-age connections are built into school life in meaningful ways through programs like Wolfpacks and reading buddies, allowing younger students to see role models in action and older students to practice leadership and responsibility in real, authentic ways.

Why Fifth Grade Is Part of Middle School
By the time they enter fifth grade, students are ready for greater independence academically, socially, and emotionally. Placing fifth grade in middle school allows us to support this readiness while still honoring where students are developmentally.
Rather than a sudden jump in expectations, fifth grade serves as a bridge. Students are introduced to middle school structures, routines, and responsibilities with intentional support. Foundations and tech literacy are programs specifically tailored for 5th grade to help students develop organization, time management, study skills, and self-advocacy. Advisory provides a consistent space for connection, reflection, and relationship-building, giving students stability as they grow.
Fifth grade is also a time for exploration before specialization. Students are encouraged to try new things and discover interests without pressure to narrow their focus too early. For example, fifth graders experience both Spanish and Mandarin before choosing a language in later years, and they participate in art, music, movement, and physical education before transitioning into more specialized exploratories of their choosing. This approach helps students make thoughtful choices grounded in experience and interest.

Academically, fifth graders engage in hands-on, integrated learning that encourages questioning, collaboration, and problem-solving. In science, students investigate topics such as forces and motion, mixtures and solutions, human body systems, and Earth’s relationship to the Sun. In Humanities, students are studying myths and ancient civilizations. Across disciplines, they are learning how to think critically, work with others, and take responsibility for their learning.
Being part of a PS-8 school means fifth graders step into middle school already feeling a sense of belonging. They know the campus, recognize familiar teachers and older students, and are beginning to see themselves as leaders in the community. That familiarity allows them to focus their energy on growth, confidence, and engagement rather than adjustment alone.
Middle school at Westside is not about rushing kids to grow up. It is about meeting them where they are, walking alongside them, and helping them discover just how capable they already are. Fifth grade, as the first year of middle school, plays an essential role in this journey, offering stability, exploration, and meaningful opportunities to grow as learners and leaders.
