Middle School Fall Outdoor Trips – Growing, Learning, and Belonging

Middle School Fall Outdoor Trips – Growing, Learning, and Belonging

Fall at Westside is always full of excitement, and this year our middle school students had an unforgettable experience with their annual outdoor trips. From 5th through 8th grade, these trips are more than just time away from campus. They’re immersive opportunities for students to build community, take risks, explore the outdoors, and grow as confident, compassionate learners.

5th Grade – Cispus
Our 5th graders kicked off the season with a magical week at Cispus. From rock wall climbs and team-building challenges to walking the Braille Trail and creating watercolor art, students practiced stepping beyond their comfort zones while supporting one another at every turn. Daily advisory reflections encouraged them to think about what they learned, how they collaborated, and how they contributed to their growing community.

6th Grade – Pilgrim Firs
The 6th grade community spent their week at Pilgrim Firs in Port Orchard, bonding through play, reflection, and shared experiences. Big lessons emerged from their time together: supporting each other when trying new things, practicing inclusion with both new and familiar friends, and taking care of their surroundings. Students showed up with kindness, respect, and joy, modeling the Caring Community values we cultivate at Westside.

7th Grade – Camp Indianola
7th graders embraced adventure at Camp Indianola, exploring tidal beaches, kayaking, hiking, and enjoying activities like the Giant Swing and the Boat Building Championships of 2025. From a Fancy Dinner to a Variety Show, every experience encouraged creativity, collaboration, and resilience. Students practiced problem-solving, teamwork, and curiosity, while also enjoying moments of fun and relaxation, from card games and logic puzzles to gooey s’mores.

8th Grade – Camp Orkila
Our 8th graders challenged themselves at Camp Orkila, taking on high ropes courses, kayaking, and hiking, all while learning to rely on and care for each other. They reflected on trust, teamwork, problem-solving, and community responsibility. Conversations in advisory have continued to focus on the kind of community students hope to build this year, including practicing empathy, shared responsibility, and belonging.

Why These Trips Matter
Experiential learning, like our fall outdoor trips, is central to the Westside approach. Students engage actively with the world around them, reflect on their experiences, and connect with peers in meaningful ways. Through these hands-on adventures, they build confidence, practice empathy, embrace challenges, and discover their strengths.

By stepping outside the classroom and into new environments, our middle school students not only strengthen their bonds with one another but also lay the foundation for a year of collaboration, curiosity, and joyful learning. These trips are a reminder of the power of community, resilience, and discovery, which define the Westside experience.
