From Blueprints to Playtime: Preschool Upgrades

If you wander onto our preschool campus these days, you’ll notice something new tucked between the trees and play structures, a charming little playhouse that somehow already feels like it has been part of our community forever.

The story of the playhouse actually began weeks before a single board was cut. Our preschoolers became builders in training, studying how things stand, balance, and connect. Clipboards in hand, they sketched “official” blueprints, some with doors in surprising places and others with windows shaped like stars. When two Westside preschool dads, Matt and Nick, arrived with real tools in tow, the kids gathered around wide-eyed as they learned what each one did. You could feel the excitement building long before the walls did.

Now the playhouse is nearly finished, just a few final touches left, but the children have already claimed it as their own. One moment it is a bakery, the next it is a rocket ship. Sometimes it is simply a quiet retreat where a few friends talk about very important preschool things. It has quickly become a place for imagination to stretch its legs.

And speaking of stretching legs, take a peek inside the preschool building, and you will find another transformation underway. The bottom floor has evolved once again into a flexible learning space, this time a movement and sensory room designed for big body play during Seattle’s darker, rainier days.

It is a room that shifts depending on what the children need. Tumbling mats and balance beams can become a full obstacle course or can be scattered for free exploration. Balance boards wobble, spinners whirl, and collaborative games like ball toss and parachute play invite teamwork and shared laughter. Along one wall, a cozy corner and sensory panels offer a place to pause, breathe, or reset, because even the busiest preschoolers need quiet moments.

The room also becomes a special workspace for Remi, our school counselor, and Vanessa, our Learning Support specialist, who guide children in building skills around self-regulation, motor development, coordination, and sensory processing.

Before the spaces officially opened, each class visited and helped create shared agreements for using them safely. “Give space.” “Walking feet.” “No yelling.” Simple ideas, but powerful when they are built together.

And of course, this season of building would not have been possible without an enormous thank you to Matt and Nick. Their time, skill, and generosity brought the preschool playhouse from a set of drawings to a beloved new part of our campus.

Between the nearly ready playhouse and the refreshed basement space, the preschool feels full of new energy, fresh places for our youngest learners to imagine, move, collaborate, and discover what their bodies and minds can do.
