At Westside, movement is an important part of learning. Physical activity helps students build confidence, focus their energy, and stay healthy, and while many find this through athletics, others discover it in the arts. Dance offers both - strength, stamina, and teamwork of sports combined with the creativity and self-expression of the performing arts.
Led by Jeffie Lou Jackson, Westside’s middle school dance program gives students a chance to experience this balance. Classes begin with warm-ups, stretching, and journaling before moving into choreography and dance progressions. Students also dive into the history of dance, explore styles from around the world, and present their findings to classmates. A collaboration with Westside’s music program introduces STEP, while special guest artists, field trips, theatre club musicals, and the twice-per-year Arts Showcase connect students to the wider world of dance.
Jeffie Lou’s goal is for every child to feel empowered and joyful in her class. She wants students to leave with a stronger sense of self, a deeper understanding of dance as an art form, and the physical confidence that comes from moving with purpose.

Outside of Westside, Jeffie Lou leads D&G Dance Company, a Seattle studio rooted in hip hop but welcoming of all styles. Founded on the belief that everyone can dance when given encouragement and a safe space, D&G has become a second home for dancers of all ages and skill levels. Students there develop coordination, musicality, and technique, but they also learn resilience, self-expression, and the value of community.
Whether through traditional school sports or dance, the goal is the same: to give students opportunities to be active, build confidence, and connect with others. At Westside, dance stands as a joyful reminder that movement is for everyone.
