Each fall, our fourth graders take part in one of Westside’s most beloved traditions—the overnight trip to IslandWood, an outdoor learning school on Bainbridge Island that has become a rite of passage for our students.
This year’s group enjoyed three days of sunshine, adventure, and hands-on learning in the woods. From the moment they stepped off the ferry, students embraced every part of the experience—carrying luggage to Mammal’s Den (their home for the week), setting up rooms, meeting their field instructors, and diving right into their first lessons in the forest.
Throughout the week, students explored IslandWood’s trails, gardens, and harbors while learning about ecosystems, sustainability, and teamwork. Each small “field group” had its own adventures: some investigated macroinvertebrates in Mac’s Pond, others created leaf prints in the art studio or harvested herbs to make tea in the garden. Many braved the canopy tower climb, cheered on by their classmates all the way to the top. Evenings brought campfire performances, games, and time to unwind back at the lodge with puzzles, reading, or a quiet chat with friends.
While the trip is filled with fun and exploration, it also represents something bigger. Experiential education and learning outside the classroom are essential parts of a Westside education. IslandWood gives students a chance to see what they’ve learned come to life—to test ideas, connect with nature, and grow their confidence as learners and community members.
A heartfelt thank-you to our incredible fourth grade team for guiding students through such a meaningful experience, and to our families for trusting us with their children during this adventure. The memories made at IslandWood are ones that will stay with our students for years to come.
