Extended Day Program

Westside School believes that all students can succeed in school with the right combination of quality programs, focused resources, and community support.

Research has shown that participation in out-of-school-time (EDP) programs can lead to improvements in youth’s educational outcomes (e.g., academic achievement, school behavior, attitudes toward school, attendance and educational expectations); enhance social and emotional development (e.g., self-esteem, positive social behavior); and reduce the likelihood that they will engage in risk-taking behavior.

Westside School offers an inclusive, multi-aged Extended Day Program, designed to engage interest of all kinds, so that every child can do something they truly enjoy! The Extended Day Team is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment both physically and emotionally, where children can learn, grow, make friends, and explore new interests all while having fun!

2024-2025 After School Program

Families who register for EDP at the start of the school year will be guaranteed a space for their child(ren). Late registrations will be based on availability.

Early Learning Stay & Play

Stay and Play is an extension of the school day for preschool and pre-kindergarten students. It runs from dismissal to 5:00pm and follows Westside’s play-based, child-centered educational philosophy. It is led by Early Learning Instructional Assistants and Assistant Teachers.

K-8 Afterschool Program

The afterschool program for kindergarten-8th grade runs from dismissal to 5:30pm. Each afternoon includes time for outdoor play, snacks (provided by Westside), homework/study hall, and free choice activities.

After School Drop-In Care

Due to student/teacher ratio considerations, only a limited number of drop-in spaces will be available per day. The drop-in fee is $42 per afternoon; the hours are not prorated. We ask that you register no later than noon on the day of care so that we may staff the program accordingly. Drop-in care is currently only available for students in K-8th Grade.

Enrichment Classes

Enrichment classes are designed for kindergarten-8th grade students and offered once a week after school.

Transition & Snack: All students enrolled in an enrichment class will have a brief transition period between their grade level dismissal and the enrichment class start time. They will be supervised and served a Westside-provided snack.

Dismissal & Aftercare: Families with an aftercare contract who need both enrichment + aftercare will receive a 50% discount applied to their aftercare tuition for the day(s) of the week the student is registered for enrichment (for the months of September-December). Students who are scheduled to attend aftercare on their enrichment class day will be directed to their aftercare space. Pickup will be before 5:30pm.

Students not enrolled in aftercare on their enrichment class day are expected to be picked up at the class end time. Students who are not picked up within 10 minutes of the class end time will automatically be enrolled in aftercare and asked to pay the standard drop-in fee of $42/afternoon.

Registration

Registration will open on Tuesday, September 3, at 4:00pm, and close on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.

Cancellations: Each class has a minimum number of students required to run. Classes cancelled by Westside School, due to low registration, will result in a 100% refund.

Withdrawals/Refunds: If circumstances change and your family needs to cancel the class, requests for refunds must be made on or before Tuesday, September 10. After September 10, registration is final, and the class is non-refundable.

Artful Games

Who doesn't love a board game? In this enrichment, students will explore and play different types of games in order to create their own! Using art materials and their imaginations they will conceptualize an idea, develop a plan, create game elements and pieces, and ultimately design a board game to play and share with friends.

¡Vamos Amigos!

A true Spanish Immersion experience! Join the experience to sing, dance, and play together while learning Spanish and exploring the culture. Music introduces culture in a very organic way. Singing can benefit students when learning a language because there are common features to music and language that allow music to improve and shape language processing.

Spelling Bee

This enrichment will take a deep dive into the English language! Using research-based tools and games, we will hone our skills in both spelling and vocabulary. Students will learn about etymology (word origin) and build their spelling skills based on roots and affixes rather than by sounds alone. All our hard work will culminate in an in-class spelling bee, modeled after the Scripps National Spelling Bee!

Chess Wizards

Chess Wizards is a premier chess education company providing fun, informative and challenging chess lessons to students. Chess Wizards teaches children many important life concepts, such as learning the ability to win graciously and accept defeat with dignity and sportsmanship. Students will be divided into groups according to their chess experience. At the end of this session, each student will have had the chance to participate in a mini-chess tournament.

Note: A 3-4 class is offered on Wednesdays.

Game On!

In this interactive enrichment class, it’s all about video games! Students will use LEGO® Bricks to build motorized models of characters from their favorite games. Game on with Super Mario Bros, Pokémon, Minecraft, Zelda, Pacman, and Sonic the Hedgehog! Each day will be a new adventure as the virtual and LEGO® worlds combine! Note - This is a Lego focused class, we will not be playing video games.

Video Game Design

Design and build your very own video game! Students will use Stencyl, kid-friendly game creation engine to make 2-D video games on the computer. Each day, students will receive a short lesson, followed by guided creative building time. Lessons focus on designing fun and challenging platformer levels. This is not a programming-focused class, but students will have the opportunity to customize their games using block-based programming similar to Scratch. At the end of the course, students will have a game they can play and share with friends and family!

Dungeons and Dragons

Engage with a world of fantasy, adventure, and team building in Dungeons and Dragons. Students will create a character, embark on an adventure, and gain role-playing and team-building skills in a collaborative setting. Players of all experience levels welcome.

Kids in the Kitchen

Join us on a culinary exploration with a touch of creativity. Each week, we will learn important ‘how to’ skills which include reading recipes, measuring, and choosing the right cooking tools to prepare simple meals. Your child be able create a variety of sweet and savory dishes to sample and recreate at home! At the end of the semester, each child will take home a personally decorated apron, and their own cookbook filled with recipes and fun learning activities. This class is about providing some fundamental culinary skills in a fun and creative way.

Bringing Literature to Life

In this after school enrichment, stories will come to life through creative, playful, and collaborative projects. Each week, students will listen to a read-aloud that inspires an on-going project they help plan, design, and execute. Through hands-on, open-ended work, students will bring literature to life and express their own unique voices and perspectives.

Bake and Take

Learn to bake a variety of delectable delights to inspire culinary skills at home! This will include pies, pastries, cakes and cookies! Each week we will learn essential kitchen skills including measuring, decorating and cleaning up. A tasty treat will be sent home as students learn to cook for others and not just themselves. Included in this enrichment, an individualized apron which your child will decorate as well as a coloring cookbook filled with the recipes we create as well as coloring activities.
