Purpose of the WPO

The WPO is an unincorporated organization formed to support Westside School. The Organization is formed in response to a resolution from the Westside School Board of Trustees. Although an independent organization, the WPO is empowered by the trustees, and its operations are conducted in concert with the goals established by the Development Committee and school administration. The objectives include:

  • Working to create a welcoming and supportive community for the children, parents and legal guardians of the students, faculty and others connected with Westside School.
  • Promoting and sponsoring voluntary fundraising projects in conjunction with overall school development plans.
  • Assisting in the coordination of volunteer support for Westside School activities and programs
  • Supporting existing information networks, creating forums and materials to enhance communication between the Parents, Teachers, Staff Administration and Trustees.

Parent Involvement

Parents are invited and encouraged to participate in all WPO events and activities. To become further involved in your child’s classroom and the WPO, consider becoming a room parent. Two room parents per class share the job, whose responsibilities include:

  • Acknowledge teachers at various times throughout the year.
  • Build community within your class (eg: plan mom’s night out, encourage family BBQ, reach out over the summer to new students in class, etc.).
  • Participate in WPO by attending meetings and events and encouraging your class to participate in WPO meetings and events as well.
  • Help teachers by tracking field trip driver sign-ups etc.
  • Coordinate the beginning of the year teacher and parent coffee and the end of year next teacher and parent "moving up" coffee.
  • Set up a classroom emergency phone tree.
