Westside School Parent Organization & Events

The Westside School Parent Organization (WPO) is the community building, and parent and teacher support arm of Westside School. Lead by a team of officers and event chairs, the WPO plans and executes a full slate of activities and galvanizes volunteers. All Westside School parents are members of the WPO.

WPO funds events, including student assemblies and activities primarily from Pizza Day sales, Halloween Fest, event concessions, and revenue from Spirit Wear sales – all of which are lead by parent volunteers.  WPO funds are also used to fund school needs. Last year, the WPO purchased athletic uniforms and equipment.

The WPO also supports teachers and school administration though organizing room parents, scholastic book orders, and library volunteers.

WPO Sponsored Family Events

Pizza Day is the biggest fundraiser for the WPO. We coordinate this fun “hot lunch” the students love, and it gives parents a day off from making a full lunch about every other Friday throughout the school year. The children are encouraged to wear their Westside School SPIRIT Wear on these days. Even if your child doesn’t eat pizza, have them wear SPIRIT Wear and get in the school spirit! Click here to order pizza for your child for the 2015 - 2016 academic year!

Scholastic Book Orders

Books provides quality books for our children at extremely competitive prices. When we order books through Scholastic, we not only get a good deal, but the school earns credits with which to buy books for our classrooms and library. The WPO committee chair for Scholastics Book orders will work with a volunteer from each class to coordinate these monthly orders. Let your room parent know if you are interested in helping out!

Quiz Night: Dates to be announced

Quiz Night is a casual, friendly competition. There are teams of parents and staff answering trivia qustions, recorded on answer sheets. A traditional chili dinner is available and guests are encouraged to bring their own beverages. Wine and beer are permitted, so long as no children are on the Westside School campus. Admission is $10 per person will cover dinner, and any proceeds will be put toward WPO funding of school assemblies, a family dance, field day and more.

Family Movie Nights: Dates to be announced

Target Audience:  All ages, family and friends welcome, films are geared for students in pre-kindergarten through third grade

Pack up your family and head to Cinema Westside for Family Movie Night. A family friendly movie will be projected on the wall for everyone’s viewing. Bean bags, lawn chairs, etc. are welcome. Concessions, including pizza and popcorn will be for for sale. All ages welcome, see you at the movies!

Family Dance: Dates to be announced

Target Audience:  All ages, family and friends welcome

Get out your fancy shoes, it’s time to dance! The Family Dance is a great community builder, and everyone who comes is sure to have a great time! Kids love it and adults have fun too! Every year, the theme will change, so save the date and twist, do the two-step or boogie-down! You may even want to show up in costume!

Halloween Fest

Target Audience: All ages, family and friends welcome; games geared to ages pre-kindergarten through fourth grade; Haunted Hallway for ages elementary and up

Date:  Thanks for a great event this year everyone! See you in October 2015!

This is one event you don't want to miss! Dress in your favorite costume and come join in the fun, along with your friends, neighbors and family! Everyone's invited! Westside School gets filled with ghosts and goblins, and kids participate in lots of fun activities, including the jumper slide, face painting, and many more ghouly activities. Nearly our entire parent community takes part to make this WPO event a favorite every year.

Family Summer Socials

Target Audience:  All ages; incoming and existing Westside School families

Dates: TBD

Westside organizes monthly socials on the Westside playground for all current and future Westside students. This has been a great way for new families to begin to meet other Westside families.

Field Day

Target Audience:  Enrolled Westside Students

Date: TBD

Under the direction of Westside's PE teacher, Donna Jornlin, the WPO sponsors this event each spring. In addition to funding the event, we help with the planning and organize the parent volunteers that make this a fun-filled afternoon that the whole Westside community enjoys.

WPO Meetings, Parent Education Series & More

WPO Parent Education Series

Target Audience: Adults

The WPO hosts one to three meetings a year, with various speakers that discuss a hot topic! These meetings are a great way to meet other parents and to learn what’s going on in the school. This year we will also have informal coffees a few mornings during the year.

Google Groups

Target Audience:  Parents of Enrolled Westside School Students

A Google group allows you to interact with members from the entire community without having to make individual emails or phone calls. Google Groups are a great tool for sharing information, organizing events, and reaching out. Looking for a new nanny? Want to find out where other parents take their kids in West Seattle for haircuts? Just need some advice? Post your query on the Google group website!

To join, go to http://groups.google.com/group/westside-school-parents and click on “apply for group membership,” or email wpo@westsideschool.org with your name and email address for an invitation to be sent to you.

Teacher Appreciation

Target Audience: All Westside School Staff

Dates:  In-service days for faculty and staff

Our Teacher Appreciation lunches are provided to the teachers and staff on in-service days and culminates in a special Teacher & Staff Appreciation Day in May. Grade levels take turns hosting a luncheon during the school year. Contact your room parent or the WPO if you are interested in helping out!
