The successful candidate(s) will have the following personal and professional attributes:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher
  • WA State Teacher Certification or the equivalent
  • Experience teaching at the Elementary Level preferably in an Independent School environment
  • Strong knowledge of content pedagogy in elementary education
  • Knowledge and experience with current best practices in elementary education related to literacy and math instruction
  • Experience in developmental instructive techniques appropriate to a variety of learning styles
  • Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with other adults as members of a positive, professional faculty
  • Appreciation for interdisciplinary, project-based learning
  • Awareness of 21st Century Learning Pedagogy and technology integration
  • Joy, passion, energy, caring and commitment

Lower School Instructional Assistants

Reports to:  Assistant Head of School for Teaching & Learning

 
Westside School is a vibrant pre-kindergarten through eighth grade serving 360 students. With a child-centered focus and a commitment to a balanced, project-based curriculum, Westside School serves as a nexus for learning and creativity in West Seattle. 
Instructional Assistant are part of teaching teams in each of the school’s pre-kindergarten and Lower School classrooms. Under the guidance of lead classroom teachers, IA’s work with small learning groups to support math and reading differentiation, support student projects, and help plan and prepare curriculum throughout the year. IA’s support administrative tasks in classroom as needed. 
 
Instructional Assistants also teach part-time in the extended day program, and on some in-service and conference days. All the assistants participate in a revolving schedule to provide additional care and activities. 
 
This individual is an integral part of the Westside School faculty, supports the mission, philosophy and policies  of the school and works under the Assistant Head of School for Teaching & Learning.
 
Essential Functions/Accountabilities
Works cooperatively under the supervision of the Head of School and teachers 
 
Attends scheduled staff meetings as required
 
Maintains positivity and professionalism in communication with everyone in the community
 
Assists teachers in establishing a safe, enriched environment suitable for children
 
Becomes a strong observer and supporter of student learning
 
Supervises activities and games on the playground
 
Supports daily classroom prep and manitenance
 
Steps in as lead when the classroom teacher is not present
 
(Specific to pre-kindergarten) Understands and implement the requirements of the Department of Early Learning Standards in the
Early School and Extended Day programs
 
Meets conditions of employment: TB Test (pre-kindergarten), Certified in CPR and First Aid
 
Meets Department of Early Learning Standards: 
 
Have a current food handler’s permit
 
Meet basic MERIT (STARS) requirements 
Extended Day Essential Functions/Accountabilities
 
Facilitate afterschool activities, classes, check-in and check-out procedures 
 
Supervise outdoor and indoor play
 
Keep the extended day classroom orderly, clean and putting the classroom back in order before leaving
 
Communicate student observations with students’ classroom teacher

Substitute teachers

 

Westside School is looking for both teachers and instructional assistants with experience working with children in grades, pre-kindergarten and eighth grade, to add to our substitute roster. We also need substitutes for music and performing arts, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, physical education, and visual arts.
