3 Things to Remember about Drop-Off and Pick-Up
By Jo Ann Yockey, Head of School
There are three things I would like you to think about as we come and go.
- Remember our neighbors. Do not block driveways and be courteous as they maneuver through our lines.
- If there is no parking space in the lot and you have parked on the street, please be careful! Walk on the inside of the cars and don’t have conversations with friends until you reach the school grounds.
- Stay in your car and let the teachers load, so that you are ready to keep the drop off lines moving.

Library News
By Sarah Wildflower, Librarian
It’s great to start a new school year! This year, we have many new books - two bookcases full! Our new books include country books, state books, and “decodable reader” books (books that beginning readers can read all by themselves.) The new decodable readers are a big hit. I had several children come up today to proudly show me the “book I read all by myself!” There are also more Amelia Bedelias, Frog and Toads, and the Warrior series, by Erin Hunter. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Ask me about our new books the next time you’re in the library!
Speaking of visiting, the library is now open to families after school on Mondays and Thursdays, from 3:15-4:15. Please come by and visit with your children. Parents, you may check out additional books for your children. I will make you a library card the first time you visit, so please allow a few extra minutes.
Please help your children remember to bring their library books back. Library books are checked out with a green bookmark indicating the book due day. All books are borrowed for one week, with the option to renew repeatedly. Kindergartners, second graders, and third graders come to the library every Monday. Afternoon pre-kindergarten and first graders come to the library every Thursday. Fourth and fifth graders drop in, and so may have books due on either day. The website will have the library schedule as well.

Pre-Kindergarten Beginnings
By Claudia Ross-Weston, Pre-Kindergarten Teacher
Welcome to Westside School! As we begin a new school year, I can’t help but notice all the new eager faces I am surrounded by each day. In the Pre-Kindergarten class alone we have 14 new families. Please take the opportunity to express the caring community that we are and welcome new members to our school.
In Pre-Kindergarten, we are beginning the year by making new friends and reacquainting ourselves with former classmates. We are reviewing colors; the children came up with a list of 27 color names. We have been mixing primary colors to see what new colors we can make and experimenting to make different shades. “I made light orange.” “I see dark green.” The students also discovered how to make black and brown. We are beginning with scientific observations and inquiry already.
The children are learning about patterning and predictions. Daily we count the numbers on the calendar and watch as a repeating pattern of shapes unfolds each time we add a new shape. We are learning new games, measuring with paperclips, building great structures and constantly learning new vocabulary and practicing new skills.
We have also been creating cards for the five children who turned five-years-old in the first two weeks September. The students are drawing self portraits, writing letters and drawing pictures for their friends. It is a very creative and lively place to be. We all look forward to a great year.

Where’s the New Roster?
I know many of you have requested a new roster. We had hoped to get this out today, but are still receiving address, phone and email updates as well as student information. In an effort to save paper, and to make the roster as complete and correct as possible, we are putting the information online today, and will send out a completed roster soon.
Click here. (The roster can also be accessed in the parent/student network. The link will be available on the first page of the network.)
