From Jo Ann - the Swine Flu
Seattle and the King County Public Health Department are continuously communicating with schools about the swine flu (H1N1) and the guidelines surrounding it. While this flu has decreased locally, the agency is anticipating that it will return this fall. In order to decrease the spread of this disease, it’s important to remember that a person with H1N1 is contagious for at least 7 days from the time s/he first has symptoms.
Please stay home for at least 7 days if:
• Your child has been diagnosed with H1N1
• If someone is still sick after 7 days, s/he should remain at home until the symptoms have been gone for at least 24 hours.
This policy is in effect so we don’t have to close the entire school.
Children with other flu symptoms, and children with fevers, should stay home for 24 hours after symptoms have passed. Thank you for your support in keeping our community healthy.

Spiritwear! Show Your Colors!
By Kate Petrich, WPO President
Wearing logo wear, especially on Spirit/Pizza Day, is a great way for kids and parents to show their spirit. We have some recycled logo wear at school in the marked bin outside the office. If you see an item your student could wear, take it! It’s free! The idea is to keep using each piece of logowear until it truly needs to “retire.” We need your logowear donations to keep the exchange running, so please look through your child’s logowear periodically to see if the sleeves are getting short and donate logowear you’re ready to pass on. New logowear is available with a wide color & style selection online. (The link is available on our website here.)

So You Think You Can Dance?
Our first assembly is tommorrow! Westside students will be treated to “Upbeat,” two amazing tap dancers and percussion performers who will engage and delight your children. Want to come and watch? You’re welcome to attend any of our assemblies. They start at 9:30am and run for about and hour or less.
Thank you to the WPO for paying for our assemblies. We couldn’t do it without them!

Watch for Important Info From Your Room Parents
By Sue Winter, WPO Room Parent Coordinator
Your classroom room parents will be contacting you soon to kick off the year. Watch for a class contribution form where you can make a one-time voluntary donation to cover this year’s class expenses, like teacher gifts, the class auction project, and the annual teacher appreciation celebration. Check your inbox throughout the year as your room parents keep you posted on upcoming Westside events and volunteer opportunities.
If you have questions, please contact Sue Winter, WPO Room Parent Coordinator, at suewinter@comcast.net or contact your room parent. Information should be on your class web page.

First Pizza Day
of the Year Coming Soon!
By Kate Petrich, WPO President
Pizza Time! Our first Spirit/Pizza Day of the year is a week away on Friday, September 18th. It’s a fun day for students to wear their logowear or school colors and enjoy pizza together. It’s also one of the Westside Parent Organization’s (WPO’s) main ways of raising money to fund things like assemblies, movie nights and other community events. Pizza is supplied by Pizza Time (the kids love it)! Drinks & side dishes are not included, so pack them separately if you’d like.
If you haven’t already, please turn your pizza forms and payment into the “Pizza Forms” folder in the office. When you hear: “But I’m still hungry!” No problem; you can keep up with your growing child’s needs at anytime during the year by adding slices to your student’s order for the remaining pizza days. Just email our pizza chair, Astrid Klopsch, at astrid@littleengineinc.com.

Pizza Days Volunteers Needed!
By Astrid Klopsch, Pizza Day Chair
Take advantage of these precious years when it’s very cool to have a parent come for lunch! It’s a fun way to get involved and enjoy a special lunch with your child, and your time commitment can be as little as 30 minutes, from 11:45 to 12:15pm. You are invited to eat lunch with your child after the pizza has been served. Please sign up for one, or both, of the options below. While we know that it’s sometimes hard to schedule so far in advance, we hope that you will be able to commit to at least 75% of the dates you sign up for.
First Pizza Day of the Month (10/2, 11/6, 12/4, 1/8, 2/12, 3/12, 4/9, 5,14, 6/4)
Second Pizza Day of the Month (9/18, 10/16, 11/20, 1/22, 2/26, 3/26, 5/28)

Have you turned in your Parent Forms?
We’re still missing some parent forms, including field trip permission and emergency forms. These MUST be turned in before students are allowed to go on field trips.
