Snow Day Notification

We are happy to have everyone back at school after missing two days due to the weather. We know that while the children can be very excited about having a snow day, it can often be inconvenient for our working parents. Our school policy is stated in the Parent and Student Handbook; “Listen to the school closures broadcasts. Westside follows the SEATTLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS’ closing schedule.” King 5 T.V. and website, www.king5.org and www.seattleschools.org are good places to check what the Seattle Public Schools are doing, even if they don’t make their decision until the morning.

The public schools have resources to determine road conditions around the area, so we rely on their judgment. Also, our teachers and staff reside throughout the Seattle area. Once we find out what Seattle Public Schools are doing, we try to post it on King 5 as soon as we can. This posting should appear on King 5 news and also on the King 5 website. Posting is done by phone, and it can be a long wait, so please be patient. Also, if the decision is made early in the morning, we may not have much time to post our information. The quickest way to find us is at www.king5.com. The T.V. message scrolls through many schools, but the website is much more direct. Click on “private schools” and “Westside School.” We will also put a message on our school website and send you an email as soon as we can. However, please DO NOT expect that either of these will happen. Our email and website access rely on our ability to get online, and with adverse weather conditions, this might not always be possible.

The bottom line is that we will follow the Seattle Public Schools’ decision. Even if you do not see a message on the website, get an email or get the “no school” message on the school phone system (which can’t be changed from off-site), we will follow the Seattle Public Schools’ decision. If they’re closed, we’re closed; if they have a 2-hour delay, we have a 2-hour delay, and if we have a 2-hour delay, it also means that morning childcare, ½ day preschool and ½ day pre-kindergarten will be cancelled.

Thank you for your understanding, and we hope you had fun playing in the snow!

Annual Giving Update

We’re getting closer to 100% family participation, but we still have a way to go. Remember, every class that reaches that goal means that Westside will receive a $1000; if every class reaches 100% participation, Westside will receive $11,000 – a much needed boost to our operating budget!

Giving is easy! Just send an email to janar@westsideschool.org and pledge to give by June 2007. Every pledge makes a difference, and is one step closer in helping us reach our goal of 100% participation and $11,000.

Here’s where the classes are now. Congratulations to the 4th grade class and to Laura’s kindergarten class for reaching 100%. Many classes are close, so send your pledge email and help us reach our goal.

Update on After-School Enrichment

There will be two make-up days for Science Club in January on Jan. 3 & 10.

After we return from Winter Break, information will be sent out for the classes to be offered January - March. We will be offering Yoga, Science, and possibly jump-rope and Creative Dance for Kindergarteners and Preschoolers. Chess is very popular these days and we will likely go to two meeting days, one for kindergarteners and one for 1st – 5th graders.

Please direct any inquiries to heidir@westsideschool.org.
