Annual Giving Kicks Off Today!

Thank you, Pitt and Krista Means, for chairing annual giving this year! Every gift received today will increase by $50, and there’s still time to give. Drop a form off in the office, pledge by sending an email to Jana in the office (janar@westsideschool.org) or donate online at www.westsideschool.org/annualgiving.htm.

The breakfast was great this morning! Thanks to everyone who came early for a tasty treat, and thanks to everyone who made a donation. The forms haven’t yet been counted, but the box is full!

Remember, 100% class participation means $1000 more per class for Westside. And every donation – or pledge – we receive today increases by $50. Every donation counts!

Thank you everyone for making this school year so great! Your support of Westside makes a huge difference!

Family Friends’ Day is Wednesday!

Family Friends’ Day is Wednesday. Once teachers have your address, the invitations will go out, and invited friends should receive it this weekend. Please keep in mind that school gets out at 11:45am for PS, PK and K students, and at noon for Grades 1-5. Family friends can pick-up your children, but please let your teacher know the plan. Remember, there is no aftercare on Wednesday.

If you don’t have a family friend available for this day, don’t worry! Friends can be shared, you can be your child’s friend, or you can trade off with another parent!

Snow and Other Emergency Closures

The following is an excerpt from the Parent and Student Handbook. Note that the start time for a late start has changed to 9:30am. It used to be a standard 2 hour late start, with half day preschool cancelled “Listen to the school closures broadcasts. Westside follows the SEATTLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS’ closing schedule. If Seattle Public Schools open with a late start, Westside late start time is 9:30am. There will be no early care, but there will be half-day preschool.

The Westside School Administration may decide to establish a different re-opening schedule. In this event, all families will be notified by phone of any school schedule change. School closures that exceed the extra days built into our schedule will usually be made up during vacation time or in June.”

Save the Shopping Date!
Announcing Westside School’s First Ever Barnes & Noble Bookfair

By Beth Mortimer, 5th grade parent

This year on Saturday December 8th, the 4th and 5th grades will host the first ever Westside School/Barnes & Noble Bookfair at Westwood Village.

This event will benefit the school, and raise funds for the 4th and 5th graders’ trip to Islandwood in February. The 4th and 5th graders will be onsite to provide reading buddies for little ones while parents shop, to staff a holiday card-making table for slightly older children, and to giftwrap books purchased at the sale.

The school benefits in three ways. First, a percentage of almost anything bought with a Westside school voucher in hand will result in a percentage of the sale profit going to the school. This applies to virtually everything sold in the store and the Café, except gift cards. So please save this date for your Barnes & Noble holiday shopping—get what you need and give the school a donation! It’s a great place to pick up holiday cards, entertainment (music, movies), gifts (books, games, yoga mats, journals, stationery, coffee by the pound, Godiva chocolate, whole cheesecakes) and more! The school even gets a percentage if you just go have lunch in the Café.

The second benefit to the school is via the book drive. The school budget can never completely accommodate all the book desires the teachers have, so they have been asked for wish lists of books they would like to add to their classroom libraries. There is a library wish list as well. Books are a great way to demonstrate holiday appreciation for all the things our teachers do for our children throughout the year, and if you utilize the wish lists, you will know which books they really want. Plus, the purchase of those books will increase the funds the school will get!

Finally, the tips the 4th and 5th graders hope to receive from gift wrapping will be applied to the cost of the Islandwood trip. So please, please save the date, Saturday December 8th (and the afternoon of Friday the 7th as well, although there will be no gift wrapping or reading on the 7th), and come do your holiday shopping and gift wrapping at Barnes & Noble in Westwood Village! Vouchers will be widely available in your take home folders before the sale, as well as in the office, and at the Open House that takes place the same day. You can even send vouchers to friends or family out of the immediate area, and they can call the store and order by phone, with free shipping if they purchase $25 or more.

If you have questions, e-mail Beth Mortimer at mortime333@msn.com.

First Grade Assembly Tomorrow!

By Renee Smith, 1st Grade Teacher

Come one come all
To the First Grade Ball!
If you care to attend
It’s in the gym
We’ve prepared a play
In the Westside Way
And we’d love you to come
And share in our fun.
We’ll talk and we’ll sing
But the play’s the thing!

The combined First Grade of Westside School is pleased to host an assembly at 9:30a.m. on Friday, November 16 in the gym. This original play is the off shoot of our study of the seven continents. We have integrated this study with reading Cinderella tales from each continent, learning the basic story elements of character, setting and plot development, and the writing process using the sequence of First, Next, Then and Finally.
