All gifts or pledges received increase by $100!
100% participation = $1000 per classroom
Let’s reach 100% participation tomorrow! Any donation or pledge you make will increase by $100! It’s the best time to give, and will really make your donation grow!
You’ve read about the importance of annual giving a lot in the last couple of weeks. Now’s the time to give! We have over $30,000 on the table in matching dollars. If every family gives whatever they can tomorrow, we will maximize the match! Go online, fill out your pledge form, or send an email to janar@westsideschool.org. It’s easy to give! Think about the amount that’s meaningful to your family, and pledge it or give it tomorrow, and together, we will reach 100%!
Gifts are already coming in, see the note below from Kindergarten student Ashley!

By Donna Jornlin, PE Teacher
As the students wind up for the holidays, it seemed logical to choose SPEED as the theme for November. The goal in P.E. is active bodies 90% of the class with 10% spent listening to directions or discussing healthy choices. Speed equates to pace, from slooooow, large movements to quick feet action. One of our favorite warm-up games is “Traffic.” Students learn pace, space awareness & locomotor skills, as well as gaining cardiovascular fitness. On the command “traffic,” students jog around each other, “shuffle” is side to side, “fast feet” is running in place & “jump” means just that with feet off the floor! With the pre-school & kindertgarteners, we move like trucks, cars & buses. Primary & intermediate grades are issued a “ticket” if they cause an accident & come see me for an exercise. Another great pace activity is red light, green light cone running. A green cone means sprint, red is slow down & walk.
I utilize stations in the gym in every grade. Anywhere from 3 to 8 stations can be set up & it not only allows students more time on each piece of equipment, but helps them work independently as well as with a partner in smaller interactive groups. This week the primary grades had a tumbling station, hopper balls for jumping & developing leg strength, “duck walkers” for balance, & a jumping rope station. The intermediate grades have “Muscle Mat Monday” for their first P.E. class of the week & I set up 6 core muscle activities, from sit-ups (abs) to windmills (obliques) to crab kicks (triceps). The first time around was at normal speed, the second time, they sprinted between stations. It probably looks like organized chaos to an observer, but the students are really good at self-direction & focus.
Mileage Club has 100% class participation this year & terrific energy! You’re welcome to join us at lunch recess for a wind-in-your-face romp around the playfield. I’m having trouble keeping up with this group! We have a dedicated bunch recording miles. Thanks go to our teaching assistants, Maria, Margaret, Heidi, Chris, Jen, Kayoko, Tara & Devin who keep it all moving.

Family Friends’ Day
Wednesday, November 26
Family Friends’ Day, or Special Friends’ Day, is Wednesday, November 26th. Guests are invited to Westside for a short program in the gym, followed by time in your child’s classroom. Any friend is invited - grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors, parents, etc. It’s a great way for your child to share his or her school with the people important to him or her. The day is short. Guests arive at 10:30am and stay about an hour and a half.
School dismisses early that day. Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students dismiss at 11:45, and children grades 1-5 dismiss at noon. If you would like your guest to drive your child home, please let your teacher know. Also, your teacher should have been in contact with you about your guest, and his or her address. Please email that to the teachers ASAP so they can mail out invitations.
It’s a great day! Family Friends enjoy their time at Westside and remembering their own elementary school days!
