Auction RSVP’s - Early Deadline is Approaching

The Westside SPIRIT auction is at the end of the month – March 29th, and tomorrow is the early bird deadline for auction RSVP’s! Don’t miss out on this fun, community building event! Every Westside auction features great items of all values. We have two silent closings, an almost live closing and a live dinner and auction. Second grade parents, Kit Cudahy and John Nuler, are working hard on a short movie, featuring Westside students from all classes, that will be premiered that evening and available for sale. You can also purchase a special black and white photo of your child, and a fun photo of the entire class.

Check out our Items of the Week in the upcoming Updates, and don’t miss out! RSVP’s will be happily accepted for a couple more weeks, but the price goes up after tomorrow. Kathy has some reservation forms in the office, or you can email your information to janar@westsideschool.org and bring in your reservation payment later. It’s a fun event and a great way to get know our entire school community. Hope to see you there!

Big Ticket Raffle

By Tracy Sundberg, 2008 Raffle Coordinator

WOW! Westside families certainly know how to show their SPIRIT! The 50/50 Auction raffle is off to a superb start. Several families have already sold all of their initial 10 and have asked for more. At least two families are working on selling 100 tickets each. How fantastic for the winning raffle ticket holder and for Westside. Remember, 50% of the sales will be awarded to one winner and the other 50% goes directly to Westside. If each Westside family sells or purchases ten 50/50 raffle tickets, the winning ticket holder will receive over $7,000. We’re off to a respectable start, but we still need your help to reach this amazing goal. Just drop your sold ticket stubs and checks in the box in the office. Pre-sold tickets need to be turned in no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 28th.

And now the “BIG TICKET” RAFFLE.
Auction Night is just 3 short weeks away. In todays take home folder each family is receiving four (4) “Big Ticket” raffle tickets. Be sure to check those book bags and backpacks. The “Big Tickets” are being offered at $25 each. Buy them for yourself or someone special; sell them to family and friends. Either way, all proceeds benefit a great cause… our children! The winner does not need to be present at the drawing, just be sure to include a prize choice on the ticket stub. Sold ticket stubs and payments can be placed in the box in the school office. Pre-sold tickets need to be turned in no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 28th. The winner will get to choose one of the 5 pre-determined live auction items for their prize. You, the Westside Community, have once again come through with some fabulous live items and the prize choices are:

  • 4 Diamond Club Tickets to the Seattle Mariners
  • $1,000 Shopping Spree ($500 gift card to Nordstrom & $500 gift card to Macy’s)
  • Spot in the 3-night Sun Valley “Guys Weekend”
  • Ladies Stainless Steel Diamond Watch by Swiss Army
  • 4 nights in a Winthrop Mountain Home

Click here for detailed descriptions of the prizes. This PDF should make it easy to email and sell tickets to family and friends. They don’t want to be left out of this fantastic opportunity to support Westside! Keep your spirit high and watch for next week’s update.

Whoop de Hula Hoop!

By Donna Jornlin, PE Teacher

You may know me as a hula hoop but I wear a lot of disguises in the gym. Join me for a magical morning with a most energetic group of friends.

For pre-school, I may begin class as a stage to stand on. We dance to music, moving high & low or drawing shapes & letters with scarves or ribbon wands. Then it’s exciting to roll & spin across the floor or become the steering wheel for a bus. Catch me if you can!

One of the kindergarten & first grades’ favorite games is Bokwele, an African game also known as Steal the Cookies. Four hula hoops are filled with treasures. When the music begins, children hop, skip or crabwalk to another hoop, taking an item back to their own. We count & sort & begin again.

Second & third graders like to use me as a target for throwing balls, either on the floor, bouncing various size balls to a partner, or duct taped to the wall. They’ve been working hard on throwing mechanics, stepping forward with the opposite foot & aiming for accuracy with their throws.

The fourth & fifth grades play a hilarious warm-up game of hula hoop tag. The orange hoops are IT! Standing in a hoop, we shuffle around the floor, bumping into each other’s hoops, sitting down when tagged. Girls in blue hoops are IT! It’s rapid fire fun. Then it’s an endurance contest of who can keep their hoop rhythm the longest around their waist or who can spin more than one.

Our February health focus was “Are you heart smart?” The younger students practiced finding their pulse & noticing how the beat changes after exercise. Is exercise good for your heart? Is it an organ or a muscle? What happens to a muscle that isn’t used? Intermediate grades calculated resting vs. exercising heart rates, & learned the difference between aerobic & anaerobic states. Our motto.... "Never stop moving.”
