After two decades apart, Sting, Andy and Stewart are back together and will be here in Seattle. Four of you will enjoy their 2nd-night show (Thursday, June 7) from a Key Arena suite. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime reunion!

50/50 Cash Split
$5,000! Wouldn’t it be great if the 50/50 Raffle Winner took home a check for over $5,000? If each Westside Family sold or purchased all 10 of their 50/50 raffle tickets that’s exactly what would happen! We’ve gotten off to a respectable start, but we still need your help to reach this amazing goal. Just drop your sold ticket stubs and checks in the box in the office. Pre-sold tickets need to be turned in no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 23rd.

And now for the “BIG TICKET” RAFFLE....
The auction is right around the corner and in last week’s take home folder you received 4 “Big Ticket” raffle tickets. The “Big Tickets” are being offered at $25 each. Buy them for yourself or sell them to family and friends. Either way, all proceeds benefit a great cause… our children! The winner does not need to be present at the drawing, just be sure to include a prize choice on the ticket stub. Sold ticket stubs and payments can be placed in the box in the school office. Pre-sold tickets need to be turned in no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 23rd. The winner will get to choose one of the 5 pre-determined live auction items for their prize. You, the Westside Community, have once again come through with some fabulous live items and the prize choices are:

2-night Roche Harbor Luxury Getaway
1 Spot in the 3-night Sun Valley “Girls Weekend”
4 Diamond Club tickets to the Seattle Mariners

Over a Thousand Pounds for Northwest Harvest!

Do you remember bringing food to school for Northwest Harvest? You won’t believe these results!

Students have organized the Northwest Harvest food drive for the past three years. The fifth grade students advertise by making posters, then going room-to-room as enthusiastic ambassadors to get students excited about bringing foods.

They work with fourth graders (who will organize the event as fifth graders,) to collect, sort and chart the number of foods coming in. There’s an element of competition, as the stacks grow, class by class.

The first year, Westside collected about 400 pounds of food. Last year, we collected 465 pounds. This year, we collected food for distribution after the holiday season. With snow days, wind days and power outages, we as a school collected 1,073 pounds!!!

Art

By Margery Lamden, Art Teacher

Our students are learning new techniques and visually expressing feeling in their artwork. Every student, pre-K through fifth grade, has created art work that was inspired by the celebration of Chinese New Year. I showed the students pictures of Chinese art, demonstrated new techniques and also showed them how to use the materials. The pre-K and kindergarten classes created unique paper panda bears in a habitat of bamboo. The first, second and third graders painted beautiful and expressive ink paintings that have a mystical quality. And the fourth and fifth graders learned about print making and created skillful hand cut prints.

Examples of these art projects are on display in the hallway; please take a look at the art and celebrate Chinese New Year with us. Also, the Asian Art Museum at Volunteer Park has a beautiful exhibit on Modern Chinese Art called “Of Nature and Friendship.” Admission to the Asian Art Museum is free the first Thursday and Saturday of every month. The exhibit will be on display through July 29th.

Save the Date for the 1st Grade Bakery on Thursday, March 29th!

Every year, the first grade class bakes bread – and learns about science and math while they’re at it. At the end of their study, they sell all the bread they’ve made (it’s been frozen) – and we are the lucky recipients! Everything sells for only a quarter!

The Westside Bakery will be Thursday, March 29, in the hallway outside of the first grade classroom. The first graders will be selling breads at three different shifts... 8:30-9:00, 11:45-12:15, and 12:30-1:00. Everything is only 25 cents, and all proceeds from the Westside Bakery will be donated to Westside Baby.
