| June 4, 2009 Joyful Giving Joyful GivingBy Jill Weaver, 2nd Grade Teacher Jill’s second grade class took part in an amazing learning experience. The Watt family gave each student $50.00 to donate to an organization of their choice. Students decided Westside would benefit best from the money. Each student chose to donate their money to a different area of Westside’s operating budget, choosing from a list they came up with that included financial assistance, staff salaries/health care, supplies, field trips, and playground equipment. Students were happy to give back to their own school community, and learned the true meaning of joyful giving.
Welcome New Officers and Members of the Westside BoardBy Denise Tabbutt, Board President We are pleased to announce the election of our new board officers: Mollie Jensen, President, Darren Medina, Vice President and Mark Sundberg, Treasurer. Mollie Jensen has been elected after serving 3 years as Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee. This is her fifth year as a trustee. Darren has been chair of the facilities committee for the last year, and this will be Mark’s second year as a trustee, where he served on the Finance committee. We would also like to welcome our new trustees, Megan Dahl and Bruce Brown. Both have been active Westside community members. We look forward to their diverse and necessary skills and experience they will bring to the board. The board is facing an exciting and challenging year. We will begin new strategic planning and continue to work on our long-range facilities plan. The board is in a strong position to move forward. As the past Board President, I am excited about our new officers and the coming year. Library UpdateBy Sarah Wildflower, Librarian Students are returning all books borrowed from the Westside School Library right now. If your children still have anything borrowed, you already received an email from me. Everyone is doing a great job getting books back! I hope you enjoy the public library during the summer – I’ll probably see you there. Since we weren’t borrowing books this week, we did something a little different. Back in April, when we voted on our favorite books for the Washington Children’s Choice Picture Book Award, Westside’s favorite was Library Mouse, about a mouse who writes and illustrates books and encourages others to do the same. So we had small blank books for children who chose to make their own books. Everyone was very excited to do just that. Some children collaborated and many helped each other spell tricky words. Bianca chose to write her book on pages going from right to left, like some Japanese books. Kieran read me his book on fossils. Kylie wrote about her dog, Duncan, while Elena wrote about peacocks. Nikolas started on The Tale of Spiderman, with a fantastic drawing of Spiderman on the cover. The third grade girls decided to make a series of animal books: Celina, Amrine, and Anna C. wrote about dogs, Jordan about rabbits, Larisa about butterflies, Isabel about the hamster she hopes to get, and Lucie wrote a week in the life of her cat, Georgia. Lily and Anna N. wrote books together about Pippi (the dog), Pippi and the Opossum and The Opossum and the Cherrie [sic] pie.
