100%!!!

By Jana Riggan, Director of Development & Marketing

Congratulations Westside! We reached 100% annual giving participation! Woo hoo!

Thank you everyone for donating and making this annual giving the most successful yet! Very few, if any, PNAIS schools ever reach this amazing participation goal, and I’m very excited to be able to say that we have done it! We should give each other a pat on the back!

Here are some interesting statistics:

  • To date, we’ve received over 300 donations
  • We have raised over $120,000
  • About 200 donations were received by the kick-off date
  • We have 21 new sustainers
  • And 92 sustainers!

Thank you for being such a great and amazing community!

What’s Your Golden Egg?

By Kate Petrich & Roshele Allison, Auction Procurement Chairs

Besides our child(ren), of course, we each have a “golden egg” - that is, a skill, talent, resource or contact that could lead to a brilliant auction item. The tricky part can be coming up with an idea. You could ask your employer for available season tickets or a product they’re willing to donate, or team-up with other parents and design a party.

Please return your forms and donations to the bin outside the school office. The devil’s in the details: when possible, please include detailed descriptions and/or restrictions.

Questions? Ideas? Contact Kate or Roshele:

Korean Teachers Visiting Westside

Westside School is honored to be one of 15 area schools selected to host three teachers from the Republic of Korea (the South Korean Gangwon province). They will join us for two weeks starting Monday, January 11th. Teachers have been selected for their excellence in teaching and their good English-speaking ability, and will observe various classrooms to see what teaching is like in America. They are very interested in how Westside School uses strategies such as project-based learning, investigations, and integrated lessons. The visiting teachers will also teach our students a little about the Korean culture. We’re very excited to have them here, and it’s an exceptional opportunity for our community to learn about life in Korea as well as for our guests to experience the “Westside Way.” On Tuesday, January 19, a delegation of Korean officials will also visit our school.

It is our hope that this experience will cultivate a long-lasting, cross-cultural understanding of the Korean culture and build a relationship between our school and the school’s of our guests. We believe that through this experience our students will not only learn about another culture but it will also spark an interest in becoming globally-minded citizens and future world travelers.

2nd Grade Field Trip to SANCA

By Jill Weaver, 2nd Grade Teacher

Over the past few weeks 2nd grade has been studying Balance and Weight. Children experience balance in many ways daily: riding a skateboard, participating in gymnastics, practicing ballet, or even walking on the curb. All of these experiences provide children with ways to better understand how weight effects balance. 2nd grade students extended their learning by attending a class at the School of Acrobatics and New Circus Acts. Students learned to juggle, jump on the trampoline and walk on a tightrope. They learned they had to use balance to perform these acts. It was an unforgettable learning experience.

Open House
Saturday, 1-3pm

Do you have friends or neighbors interested in Westside? Or even wondering where to send their children to school? Have them check out Westside on Saturday at the Open House!

All classrooms will be open and teachers will be available from 1-3pm on Saturday. It’s a great way for parents to talk to teachers about their classrooms and curriculum, and for potential students to see the school and experience the Westside classroom when it’s not filled with students.

If Saturday does not work out, there are two tours they could attend: Friday, January 8th and Wednesday, January 13th. These two tour dates and the Open House are the last opportunities to see the school before the application deadline - January 14th! It’s early this year, so if you know of anyone who’s planning to apply and just hasn’t had the time yet, please remind them that the deadline is quickly approaching! Thanks!
