Dessert Auction Volunteers Needed!
By Theresa Schaefer, Dessert Chair
The Westside “Gung-Ho!” auction is coming up quick, featuring the ever-popular “Dessert Dash.” This annual tradition takes place after dinner at the Gung-Ho! auction. As always, a luscious assortment of delectable treats will be up for grabs… all provided by Westside parents.
Tables are ranked based on the total contributions made on the bid ticket in the dessert auction envelope. The highest bidding table is called first to pick their dessert from the bounteous display. Five seconds later the announcer calls out another table number and the “runner” selects their dessert, and so on, and so on… until all tables have selected a dessert.
Generosity and a “Gung-Ho” runner are the key to scoring the pick of the crop from the bevy of beautiful treats. This activity is fast-paced, fun, and always a nice money-maker for Westside. But, it can’t happen without you. Please sign up to provide a dessert.
Baking not your thing? That’s ok! Your dessert can also be from your favorite restaurant or bakery.

Gung-Ho Advertising in the Auction Catalog
Interested in reaching the Westside community with your business, hobby or special announcement? We are selling ad space in the Westside Gung-Ho auction catalog! These advertising dollars help supplement the cost of the auction and it is a great way to communicate with parents and other Westside supporters.
For as little as $50 you can:
• Congratulate a coach for a season well done. Many of our Westside parents volunteer as coaches and/or mentors in extra-curricular activities. It’s a great way to say “Thank You!”
• Spread the news that you have a new or existing business in West Seattle. Advertise in the catalog and let other parents know that you are a fellow Westside parent/alum.
• Advertise your service/professional business. Many businesses do not have tangible items to sell or haven’t yet participated in our auction.
For pricing and questions, please contact Kate Petrich at 206-988-5820 or katepetrich@gmail.com. Advertising forms are available online.

Art Documenting History
By Margery Lamden, Art Teacher
Through the ages, artists have sought to preserve a little piece of their world. Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students visually illustrated the energetic spirit that occurred during the Inauguration of President Barack Obama.
Being able to visually set a mood and convey a feeling is exactly what our students set out to do by blending chalk and overlapping colors. In class, I demonstrated different ways to do this. We talked about how blending colors can create an illusion of depth and movement. While practicing these new techniques the students were amazed by what they achieved. One student said, “Wow it looks like it’s really moving.” The students worked with focus, skill, and excitement.
Please take a look at the expressive and colorful designs displayed in the hallway. Georgia O’Keeffe said, “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I had no words for.” There isn’t room for every piece of art, so ask your child to show you any artwork sent home. It is a privilege to teach and observe our students while they grow in expressing their artistic abilities.

Thanks for a Terrific Movie Night!
By Kate Petrich, WPO President
Thank you to our Movie Night Chair, Jan Ellis, for putting on another fantastic Movie Night. Well over 200 people came to watch the heroic adventure across the arctic and many are saying how much they enjoyed it - what a tremendous success!
It couldn't be done without our wonderful volunteers. Thank you John Hilgedick, Matt Davis, Melanie Leary, Steve Petrich, Pam Snider, Carl Guess, students Zoe Hilgedick and Rebecca Vo, and the many others who pitched in along the way, and ensured an easy set-up/clean-up. What Spirit!
**Save the Date for Our Final Movie Night of the Year: March 20th!
