Auction Basics
By Jana Riggan, Development & Marketing Director
I just received an email with some great questions about the auction. Many of you may have the same questions, so I’m going to share the answers with our entire community.
What time does the auction start and end?
Doors open with the start of the first silent auction at 5:30pm. Dinner will start around 7pm, and the live auction shortly after dinner is served. It usually ends around 10pm or so.
Where is it being held?
This year, the auction is at the Hall at Fauntleroy.
Is it formal, casual, in-between?
This year, the auction will be cocktail attire. (If you Google cocktail attire, you will get the following definition from about.com: Cocktail attire technically means a suit for men, and a cocktail dress for women, which usually means a short dress (preferably not career wear). I prefer a little black dress -- and depending how formal you think the event is, you can glam it up with accessories. Of course you have lots of leniency in what you wear -- a dressy pantsuit, a lovely skirt and top, etc. Everyone interprets the meaning of dress requests differently.
Are there refreshments? Drinks? Food? Dancing? Music?
Dinner will be served. When you get your invitation, you will be able to choose your meal from a couple of choices. Drinks are also available to purchase. During the silent auction, a specialty cocktail is available, along with beer and wine and non-alcoholic beverages. During dinner, bottles of fine wine may be purchased. There will be background music, but no live band and dancing.
Is seating assigned? If so, how? Can you choose your tablemates?
Seating is assigned by table. Once you get your invitation, you may list who you would like to sit with. The auction committee does its best to fulfill these requests, and you will always be seated with someone from your class or someone you request to be seated with.
Can you invite friends or family members?
You may invite friends and/or family members. It is a fundraiser, and we hope that our guests will be willing to spend some money, but everyone is welcome to attend.
How does the auction work? Is there an auctioneer, a silent auction?
There are usually 2 silent auctions, and a live auction with a professional auctioneer. Items with a lower value are in the silent auctions, as well as some party sign-ups. Higher value items are in the live auction.
Do you buy tickets?
Yes. When you get an invitation, you will fill out the RSVP card and purchase your ticket.
Are children invited?
Children are not invited.
Look for your auction invitation after mid-winter break, and if you have any questions that weren’t answered, please email Jana Riggan at janar@westsideschool.org. We hope to see you all there!

We want to hear from you!!!
Interested in reaching Westside parents with your business, hobby or special announcement? We have space available in the Westside 25 - Toast of the Town auction catalog. Advertising dollars help to supplement the cost of the auction and it is a great way to communicate with parents and other Westside supporters.
For as little as $50 you can -
Congratulate a coach for a season well done. Many of our Westside parents volunteer as coaches and/or mentors in extra-curricular activities. It’s a great way to say thanks!
Spread the news that you have a new or existing business in West Seattle. Advertise in the catalog and let other parents know that you are a fellow Westside parent/alum.
Advertise your service/professional business. Many businesses do not have tangible items to sell and have not participated in our auction. Consider contacting your accountant, dentist, doctor, real estate agent, bank, etc. and see if they would like to advertise.
For pricing and questions, please contact Carolyn @ Ccomick@comcast.net. (Advertising forms are available here.)
