3rd Grade Update
By Joe Tutch, 3rd Grade Teacher
Joe’s third graders are busy learning all about the Aztecs! We have been studying their interesting history and culture since the beginning of January. As we approach the end of this unit of study, third graders have been focused on a couple of different on-going projects.
One of these projects is their auction project… an Aztec Sun Stone Calendar. This wooden Aztec artifact was carved and cut out by my father. Third graders will then use available materials to create the inside of the sun stone. These materials range from wooden scraps to pieces of rope to combs. Each third grader will glue their piece in place and then paint over it with an appropriate latex paint color. This auction project will be completed in the next couple of weeks.
The other on-going project is a class play performance of the Aztec short story called The Flame of Peace. This story is about a young Aztec boy who must outwit nine evil lords of the night to obtain the flame of peace from Lord Morning Star in order to prevent the outbreak of war. We are in the planning stages of this play. The script, costumes, play props, and backgrounds are still in progress. This play will be ready for an audience in about a month. The actual play performances will be announced very soon!
